Abrasion Resistant Adhesives, Sealants & Coatings

tech tip icon

Specialized adhesive formulations have been developed that are characterized by outstanding abrasion resistance. Abrasion resistance refers to the ability of an adhesive to resist wearing due to contact with another surface. Wearing occurs when a hard rough surface slides across a softer surface, usually the adhesive material, causing the undesired removal of material from the surface.

Abrasion Resistant Adhesives, Sealants and Coatings

Surface abrasion may be classified in three different ways: wear, scuffing and fatigue. These actions include the deterioration of material from a solid surface by the recurrent movement of another surface, the scraping of a surface and the stressing of adhesive material repeatedly, respectively. When countering these stresses, adhesive performance depends on the intrinsic formulation properties of the adhesive system, the localized film thickness of the adhesive, as well as the adhesion properties of the system to the specific substrate.

Master Bond specializes in the development of epoxies, urethane modified epoxies and UV cure systems that protect against wear and corrosion in industrial environments. Our adhesives are often selected for use in pump casing, chutes, pipes, slurry lines, vibrating screens and valve bodies. UV curable hard-coats are also available for scratch resistance preferences, providing a durable protective coating to protect glass, metals and plastics against shallow cut marks.

One of our most popular abrasion resistant systems is UV11-3, which cures readily upon exposure to UV lamps or EB radiation. UV11-3 coatings offer high performance and cost effective protection, especially for optically clear plastic substrates with excellent long-term durability. In addition, nanosilica filled UV22 offers fast cure speed upon exposure to UV light, excellent physical strength properties and superior chemical resistance. EP30D-7 is a flexibilized, two component system that has outstanding toughness, strength and chemical resistance. It is also able to withstand thermal cycling and exposure to vibration and shock.
