Product Description

Master Bond UV16Med-FD is a low viscosity, high strength epoxy based UV curable system for bonding, sealing and coating. It is 100% reactive and does not contain any solvents or other volatiles. It is a cationic curing system and has no oxygen inhibition. UV16Med-FD cures quickly when exposed to a UV light source with a wavelength ranging between 320-365 nm, with the optimum at 365 nm. The energy required is typically 20-40 milliwatts per cm². The rate of cure depends upon the distance of the light from the material being cured, the thickness of the section and the intensity of the light source. It typically cures in thicknesses of 0.001-0.002 inches up to 0.120 inches, with thinner sections generally curing in 30-60 seconds. Thicker sections will take longer to cure, and post curing with heat will enhance the cured properties.

UV16Med-FD bonds well to a wide variety of substrates including plastics, glass and many metals. It is highly resistant to acids, bases, solvents, and numerous sterilants, including ethylene oxide and glutaraldehyde. It also withstands repeated autoclaving. The chemistry of the cured system allows for good thermal cycling capabilities. It is a reliable thermal and electrical insulator with a service temperature range of -80°F to +400°F.

Since UV16Med-FD is a cationic curing system, it has a higher glass transition temperature compared to other UV type systems. Post curing with heat is required in achieving a higher Tg. Without heating, the Tg is 90-100°C. If post cured for 30 minutes at 125°C, the Tg increases to about 130-135°C. Additional post curing at this temperature will further increase the Tg allowing for better resistance to autoclaving. UV16Med-FD is an attractive candidate in medical applications where UV light curing is feasible and resistance to sterilization is critical.
