Flashback Friday-MB600-MB600S

MB600S is a sodium silicate adhesive/coating that was developed accidentally by our top research chemist. While working in the Master Bond laboratory, Sam noticed how well MB600 adhered to plastic surfaces. It was easy to apply by brushing, had an advantageous low viscosity, was highly effective as a moisture barrier, and most importantly, environmentally friendly. After giving it much thought, conferring with technical colleagues and chemical suppliers, and reading scientific papers, he decided to try adding conductive fillers to this product. His objective was to find a solvent-free substitute to the popular X5N, X5G and X5SC family of Master Bond EMI/RFI shielding materials.

This effort was quite laborious. A wide range of different chemical inert, high purity conductive flakes and powders were compounded using different mixing techniques to optimize performance. Particular attention was given to conductive stability after long-term environmental, physical strength, thermal stability testing. After completing our experimentation we decided to send MB600S to a prestigious independent testing lab specializing in EMI/RFI shielding to verify the reliability of our results.

The outcome was indeed quite impressive! MB600S offers awesome shielding effectiveness. The data is as follows:

  • Shielding effectiveness, 75°F
    • 1-2 GHz 95-105 dB
    • 2-3 GHz 95-80 dB
    • 4-18 GHz 80-60 dB
    • Surface resistivity, 75°F
      • <1 milliohm
This water based, single component system can be applied by brushing or spraying. It is serviceable from 0°F to +700°F. Other benefits include minimal tack free time, uniform thickness and cost effectiveness. This formulation has gained popularity for use on electronic enclosures in consumer electronics, industrial equipment and appliance applications.
